Launch Process and Orbit Insertion

On 7 August 2018 at 12.18 west Indonesia time, Merah Putih (Telkom 4) Satellite lifted off by Falcon 9 rocket successfully launch from Space Launch Complex 40 (SLC-40) at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida, USA. This rocket has 70 meter height and 3.6 meter in diameter, at the top of the rocket is where a capsule named “Dragon Spacecraft” located as a cargo room for the satellite Merah Putih to be stored during the launching process. The Merah Putih Satellite itself has a total mass of 5.8 ton which consist of 3.8 ton fuel and the rest of 2 ton is the satellite component.

The first one minute is the beginning of the launching process, at the 3 minutes mark the rocket has already moving with velocity more than 9000 km/h. At the 8 minutes mark the first rocket is released and return to the earth, while the second rocket keep carrying the satellite until it reaches 500 km at the 27 minutes mark, which then the satellite is released. At the 32 minutes mark the capsule has reached 36000 km and the satellite is fully separate from the capsule. The satellite itself still cannot be operated and need 11 days for it to reach its orbit which is 108 degree east above Selat Karimata. 28 days later the satellite transponder is observed and tested, which then authorised by PT Telkom. The launching process cost 2.3 billion, which is a 40 percent cut from the previous Telkom 3S Satellite launching cost.

Operation/Mission

Merah Putih (Telkom 4) Satellite will be used as a communication satellite that strengthens the operation of the Telkom 2 Satellite and Telkom 3S. Alex J Sinaga, President Director of Telkom, told Tirto.id that the launch of Merah Putih was to support Telkom's global expansion which would become the "Global Digital Hub". The satellite weighs 5,800 kilograms and the 70 meter high carries 60 active transponders. The 60 transponders consist of 24 C-Band transponders that will be sold to South Asian countries, 12 Extended C-Band transponders that will serve the Southeast Asia region, including Indonesia, and 24 C-Band transponders that will reach the South Asian region. The C-Band transponder can reach Southeast Asia and South Asia because it uses dual-band technology. Here are the transponders that have already been booked currently (last updated on 26th of January).

Compared to Telkom 3S which only covers all regions of Indonesia, Southeast Asia, and parts of East Asia; The state-owned company said the newly launched satellite could provide communication networks to India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Maldives, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Bhutan. The satellite is scheduled to have 15 years of operating period, replacing the old Telkom 01 Satellite that has stopped operating a year ago.

Strategic Value of Merah Putih’s Orbital Slot:

Merah Putih, located on 108 degree to the east (roughly above Karimata Strait) mainly has strategic orbital slot. As it serves South East Asia and South Asia regions, it longitude are well-fitted with it due to its location is inbetween Southeast and South Asia. Beside that, It also can cover some 3T region (Terdepan, Terluar, Tertinggal) on Indonesia, for example Papua (as it can broadcast TVRI Papua channel) and some villages in Jambi (It provides a local Jambinese TV Channel called Jek TV).
